The Role of Water in Digestive Health: What Water Should You Drink?

PART 1  |  PART 2 >>

S y n o p s i s

Water is a vital essential element needed for your body. It is interesting and educational to know some more facts about how this simple molecule, H20, relates to your body composition and functions.

The human body is composed of approximately 55%- 65% water by mass, but composes around 67% by the count of number of atoms. The percentage of water in babies is much higher, between 75% to 78%. Plasma (the mixture of proteins, cells, and water which makes up your blood supply) is around 90% water. We are composed of mainly four elements by weight: oxygen (O) , carbon (C) , hydrogen (H) , and nitrogen (N). These elements are approximately 96% of the human body?s weight. The combination of two of them, hydrogen and oxygen (composing the substance water), are 55- 65% of your weight. Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chlorine, and sulfur are elements that make up the majority of the rest of your body weight.

Nearly 99% of your weight is made up of the elements of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus, with the other elements contributing to about .85% of the remaining elements. Just what does that water do for you that your drink? It does the following: Helps regulate your body temperature; Helps you digest your food, which starts with saliva; Detoxifies and enables your body to excrete wastes through perspiration, urination, and defecation; The kidneys and liver use it to flush out wastes, as do Blood consists of about 90% water, so it carries nutrients and transports biological waste products; Protects and moisturizes our joints; Muscles consist of 75% water; Moisturizes the air in our lungs so that it can transport the oxygen into our system; Protects our spinal cord and other sensitive tissues; Your brain consist of 90% water; Your bones consist of 22% water; Helps carries the cells that repair your body; It is estimated that 3 billion water molecules per second flow through cells And [probably the controversial part] the water starts the chemical reactions that allow the cells to produce energy allowing you to function and live.

It is the same as the battery in your car. Without it, the engine will not start. It provides the electrical energy for biochemical reactions. And now you see why it is important to put the right type of water into your body.
