Smart Change: Five Tools to Create New and Sustainable Habits in Yourself and Others

PART 1  |  PART 2 >>

S y n o p s i s

"Smart Change" delves into the intricate psychological mechanisms that underlie the formation and maintenance of habits, whether in individuals or groups, and presents practical, accessible guidance for transforming these habits. In this engaging narrative, Markman explores a broad spectrum of habits, spanning personal behaviors like improving dietary choices and regular exercise to work-related habits such as effective learning and influencing customer decisions. He introduces five potent tools for facilitating behavior change in individuals and for influencing the habits of those around us:

1. Master the "Go" System: Identify habit triggers, replace old behaviors with new ones, and devise specific strategies to overcome obstacles.

2. Harness the "Stop" System: Develop techniques for coping with stress and other hindrances that impede the adoption of new, positive habits.

3. Optimize Your Goals: Map out the path to behavior change and ensure the successful integration of these changes for the long term.

4. Manage Your Environment: Modify your surroundings to significantly diminish negative behaviors and habits.

5. Engage Your Neighbors: To impact the behavior of others, comprehend the shared culture that fosters mutual interdependence. Empower neighbors and colleagues to exert a profoundly positive influence on the behavior of fellow community members.
